Catskills

When our clients first visited this house, they fell in love with it because it felt authentically Woodstock. Built in 1968, the house retained many original details, such as exposed heavy timber posts and beams, wood ceilings, and heavy textured wall plaster. It has a light mid-century spirit, thanks to an open-floor layout and a horizontal form oriented towards sweeping mountain views. Our approach was to preserve and celebrate those elements that embodied the house's charm. We used distinctively modern furniture and decor, with clean lines and pops of color, to counterbalance the roughness of the architecture, and mixed in mid-century classic and vintage pieces as a nod to the house's past. The result is a dialogue between new and old, sleek and scuffed: a quiet balance that puts the inhabitant at ease and leaves room to admire the stunning views.

We collaborated with our clients, cinephiles, on curating a collection of vintage movie posters from the 1960s and '70s to decorate the private rooms of the house. We then used them as inspiration for the decor and the basis of the color palettes we developed. The posters carry a sense of narrative and surprise from room to room, evoking the spirit of the era.
