Shelter Island

For this project, JDA was hired to transform a previously untouched basement for a home in Shelter Island, NY into a warm and welcoming environment. Working with this completely raw space, we conceived of an interiors concept that continued upon the overall design strategy throughout the home, while introducing a series of inventive ideas to cohesively combine contemporary and vintage design elements. Taking visual inspiration from a Märta Måås-Fjetterström tapestry, the palette is both earthy and vibrant, and creates an inviting space for resting or working. The entire room is wrapped in a warm cypress wood, while the floor is made of a beautiful wide-plank oak, which creates a comfortable environment that feels authentic to this beachfront property. Extensive research went into carefully sourcing the vintage furniture pieces and fixtures throughout, including the tables, rugs, lighting, and bench. A custom-designed wall unit inspired by Shaker design discreetly hides a TV and includes a secretary’s desk for additional work-from-home space. JDA also designed a full bathroom that deploys ceramic tiles to create a singular space that utilizes the carefully curated palette from the main space. The inventive marriage of old and new forms a hybrid environment that carefully addresses the needs of our clients and reflects their vibrant sensibilities.
