Tribeca Lobby

This project was a full renovation of a residential building lobby in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. We worked in a space that had a dramatic scale, with high ceilings and wide open areas, but lacked character and a sense of place. JDA was commissioned to reimagine the lobby and introduce residential comfort and warmth, evoking an apartment’s interior, while reflecting the neighborhood’s layered urbanity.

Our design heavily relies on using natural and artificial lighting to create an internal glow that fills the space. Lighting serves also to highlight a mix of rough and highly honed materials that, with their different textures and patterns, give a unique identity to the place. The crisp and precise lines of the oak and stone elements convey elegance and sophistication, while the warm tones of the materials provide familiar comfort.

A slatted wood wall, en route to the entry door, screens a mailroom without fully secluding it. The slats have a trapezoidal shape and are installed at an angle. The result is that the screen looks different when approached from different sides, livening up the routine of entering or leaving the building.

JDA designed a number of custom furniture pieces, including the creamy marble reception desk and the credenza and mirror in the sitting area. The opportunity to design furniture for the space allowed us to execute our full vision for the space.
